The defensive tackle makes sure the other team's players can't get to where they're trying to go. Sometimes, they even break through and tackle the quarterback - this is called a sack.

The safety is in the back of the defensse, furthest away from where the ball starts. If the player with the ball breaks through, it's the safety's responsibility to make the tackle. If there's a long pass by the other team, the safety can try and make an interception as well.
